Supposing that the drive towards devotion and care for others (" sympathetic affection ") were doubly as strong as it now is life on earth could not be endured.  Just consider how many foolish things everyone of us does each day and each hour simply out of attachment and care for ourselves - and how unbearable one appears in doing so: and what then would it be like if we were to become for other people the object of these stupidities and importunities with which we usually only torment themselves!  Would we not then run away as soon as one of our neighbours came towards us?  And would we not then find it necessary to stigmatise this sympathetic affection with the abuse that we now reserve for egoism?
