What do we understand to be the impression we have of a person – I mean that by which he as it were engraves and stamps himself upon us?  We can understand nothing of him except the difference his impression has made on us and our knowledge of him is like the hollow space within that shape.  We attribute to him the feelings which his acts raise in us and we thus give to him a false and inverted positivity.  We admit him as a satellite of our known world and if he shines upon us or grows dark - we are the ultimate cause of his doing so, nevertheless we still believe the opposite!  O world of phantoms in which we live!  O world so upside down and empty and yet dreamt of as full and upright!
